A girl who wants to do something for the first time, often, so she will!

This entry is a bit different than the others in that it's not about a short, fun trip or new activity I've embarked on. It's about SCHOOL! I recently enrolled in school and attending these past couple of months has been fun and exciting for me, so I decided to tell you all about it. Here's a bit of history: I made a 5 year plan for my life at the ripe age of 17. Included in that plan was world domination, so I knew I needed smarts. Ambitious I am. I went to college right after I graduated high school and all was going to plan until I got pregnant. I was 18 and a Freshman in college. OK. Just a small hiccup. So I'll be a mom in school; not the first to do it and definitely not the last. I continued going to school during my pregnancy and it wasn't that bad. After my first trimester ended and my second started, getting around campus was a joy. I really enjoyed showing up to class barely on time, sweaty and out of breath. I especially enjoyed sitting in the comfortable chairs during class for what seemed like an eternity. Since my bundle of joy was born in October, I took Fall quarter off and returned Winter quarter. It was a cake walk at first: I was motivated by my new responsibility, eager and hopeful. Unfortunately, I fell ill soon after my baby girl was born and due to my illness I had to withdraw from school. I put school on a temporary moratorium. After I was well enough I was back at it. Since I no longer had a human protruding from my front, I liked walking the gigantic campus because it helped me shed the weight. However, as life often likes to do, I was thrown another curve ball; I started dating my now husband and wanted to spend every waking minute with him. I was able to hold on to gaining my smarts for world domination for awhile, but it didn't take long for me to ditch school and that was all she wrote...
Fast forward 12 years. I'm at work and in the office of a really good friend of mine. She encourages...no practically forces me to return to school. I hesitantly agree and enroll. After only 2.5 months I am kicking butt! The college I attend is an online college that is competency-based. I'll earn my degree through demonstration of skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series of carefully designed assessments. I'll take tests, write papers, and complete assignments. But rather than focus on seat time or credit hours, WGU makes sure I graduate as a highly competent professional. My kind of school! I'm going for my BS in Healthcare Management and my expected graduation date is December 2017 thanks to my 1.5 years at my prior college! I'll be 33 this year. I'm married, have 3 kids, a dog and a turtle. I also have health issues and a full time job. I'm a sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and have a good amount of besties. I have hobbies, which include wine drinking, and I love to just chill. I knew when I dropped out of school in 2004 that I'd return but I never in a million years thought it would take me 12 years. Going to school to me is empowering. It's fun, hard, irritating and enlightening. Every day that passes I learn something new. That, to me, is what life's about. GROWTH! I encourage you to grow. It may not mean school. It may mean letting go of old bad habits or branching out. In the words of T.I.: Big things poppin' and little things stoppin'. World domination, here I come.
